Pelișor Castle
The quieter, more intimate royal residence — and the one most visitors rush past.
A castle built for the next generation
Pelișor was built between 1899 and 1902 as home for Crown Prince Ferdinand and Princess Marie, the future King and Queen of Romania — part of the same royal ensemble along the Peleș valley that King Carol I built over his reign. From the outside it shares the German neo-Renaissance language of its larger neighbour, but step inside and the mood changes completely: Marie filled it with Art Nouveau interiors, rich with symbolism and a much more personal, modern touch than the formality of Peleș.
Pelișor vs. Peleș
Most visitors book Peleș and skip Pelișor, or rush through it in ten minutes. That's a shame — the two castles tell opposite halves of the same story: one built by a founding king to impress, the other by his heirs to actually live in. Seeing both back to back, a few steps apart, gives a far better sense of the family than either alone.
